First world problems
Its been brought to my attention that a family of a kid who died in a backcountry avalanche has decided to place 22 1×1 memorials on 22 mountain tops, as the son was 22. This has apparently outraged members of the hiking community and they plan on chiseling them off if and when they see them. Anybody else find that disgusting and offe…nsive? Personally, when I hit a peak I’m there for a view – a 1×1 memorial isn’t going to harm me any. It’s a memorial. Chiseling it off? FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS. Seriously. I cannot believe this constitutes “pollution” http://www.clubtread.com/sforum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=36502&whichpage=1
in their minds. Let’s get outraged about a memorial – screw the thousands of other things worth getting our panties in a twist about. WHAT THE EFF!?!?!!
I understand the other side of the argument – but the fact of the matter is that everybody does NOT do this. This is just the way this family has chosen to grieve. And it’s not a massive cross in the middle of the view – it’s a 1×1 plaque on the mountain, which isn’t really where people on the peak are looking anyways. It’s just… heartless to me.

here is a quote from his mom about what it means
“Norm and I have decided to climb 22 mountain’s in memory of Danny for each year we had him.
So far we have climbed 7 mountains.
The memorial medal was something we ourselves designed. Actually Danny’s older brother designed most of it.
The tree of life which was a tatoo Danny had on his back. It was like a family tree and family was important to Danny.
VERITAS was another tatoo Danny had on his leg which means the word TRUTH in latin.
I’ll never forget the day when Danny and I sat down and he asked me “Mom I want to get another tatoo and I have thought about what I want and put alot of thought into my choice, he said TRUTH is important to me so that is the reason he got the word VERITAS.
He also got 3 red star’s. When I opened Danny’s Bible one day after he passed away I discoverd in his bible 3 star’s, someone had written Danny’s stars and put it in his Bible so we think that is what they meant. That is the reason we put red in his memorial medal.
We also put his name in Hebrew on the medal as well.”

~*~* Hump Day ~*~*
Saltspring Island is amazing. I made friends with a cutie that was camped next to us at BassCoast and we hung out this Saturday past to check out the fireworks. We grabbed some brews and fireball and headed down to a secluded area on Kits beach and plopped our butts in the sand. He’s living party time on Saltspring with his aunt and uncle right now and working as an apprentice carpenter and had mentioned that there was a party going on the next day. I ended up joining him for it and had a glorious 24 hours on the island. His aunt and uncle have an amazing piece of property. They have the whole back converted into a mexican style bar. I’m talking full on here. Swings, fire pit, stage, lighting, sound system, the whole 9 yards. They craned up an old Airstream motorhome ( the old school cylindrical metal ones ) that they have as the ‘guest’ house and a bathroom for the party. So cool. Ganga Giri were in town from Australia and came over to play us the beats. The bar was out of control and the tequilla was intense. When the sun started to creep over the treetops we called it a night and got a few hours of neccessary sleep. The morning brought mimosa’s at the bar and a jaunt into town for some brunch. Double spicy horseradish caesar’s and eggs benny X 2. Then off to the indian reservation for hours of R&R on our very own secluded beach. BEST.WEEKEND.EVER. Our server at the restraunt asked us where we were vacationing from. Confused, we said we weren’t but why do you ask? “Oh you guys just seem like you are having the greatest time. I thought for sure you were on vaca!” Indeed. Blissed out

Ah, life
The ups and downs of a simple 14 day period of time. Work stress, Aaron’s dad passing away, being told I am lacking something essential however not knowing how to help me get it, pinning down the apartment details from a couple of free spirited hippy girls…. leads into a brilliant weekend at Basscoast Project 2010 surrounded by beautiful people, art, music, and scenery… into getting sick, and getting a verbal dressing down from someody I respect.
